What Bond Building Means Before Your Next Color Appointment (And How Aveda Botanical Repair Works)

Thanksgiving is five weeks away, and holiday photos follow right behind it. If you are booking color before then, maybe you are going lighter, covering gray, or refreshing a tone that faded over the summer. Somewhere in that conversation, someone will mention bond building.

Here is what a hair bond is, what breaks it, and how Aveda's Botanical Repair collection is made to build new ones, so you walk into your appointment knowing what to ask for.

Color, heat and daily styling all break the bonds that hold hair together

Each strand of hair is made mostly of a protein called keratin. Aveda describes the bonds inside that protein, including disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds, as the glue that holds each strand together.

Those bonds can break. Aveda groups the causes into four kinds of damage: heat, chemical, mechanical and environmental. In everyday life that means color and lightener, a flat iron most mornings, tight ponytails and rough towel drying, plus an Austin summer of sun and pool days that only just ended.

Lightening is the big one. Aveda notes that color and bleach can weaken the structure of hair, and that curls and coils are more fragile to begin with. Hair that has lost bonds tends to feel dry, snap when you brush it, and tangle more easily.

How Aveda Botanical Repair is made to work on three layers of hair

Botanical Repair is Aveda's bond building collection, and it is 100% vegan. Aveda says it works on three layers of each strand at once.

The cortex

This inner layer gives hair its strength. Disulfide bonds cannot be recreated by hair care, so Aveda's scientists developed a vegan plant molecule that helps create brand new hydrogen bonds in the cortex.

The cuticle

Aveda's macro green blend of avocado, green tea and sacha inchi seed oils smooths the outer cuticle so hair tangles less and breaks less. The cold pressed sacha inchi oil comes from small family farms in the Peruvian Amazon.

The F layer

A plant derived complex made with corn and coconut mimics the thin protective coating on the outside of the hair, to help shield strands from the humidity and water that can leave them more fragile.

Color day is when hair goes through the most chemical change, which makes it the right day to think about strength.

You do not need the whole line. Start with the shampoo and conditioner, then add the masque and the leave in if your ends feel rough or you heat style most days. All four products below are silicone free.
