Aveda Miraculous Oil Explained (How to Use It on Fine, Thick and Curly Hair This Fall)

Fall in Austin changes how most of us do our hair. Once the mornings stop feeling like a sauna, the blow dryer comes back out, the flat iron gets plugged in again, and hair that spent all summer in a clip is suddenly worn down for dinners, game days and holiday photos.

That shift is a good time to look at one bottle. Miraculous Oil High Shine Hair Concentrate is Aveda's lightweight hair oil, and it is made to do three jobs at once: shine, frizz control and heat protection. Here is what it is, and how to use it on your hair type.

What Aveda made Miraculous Oil to do

Aveda describes Miraculous Oil as a concentrated, lightweight oil that wraps each strand in shine. Aveda's own figures put it at 195% more shine right away, hair twice as smooth through the day, and up to 24 hours of frizz protection.

It also works as a heat protectant. Aveda says it protects hair from heat up to 450°F when you put it on before blow drying or heat styling. For anyone who heat styles more in the cooler months, that means one product can do the job of two.

On damp hair, before you blow dry

This is where the heat protection earns its place. Towel dry first so the hair is damp, not dripping. Put a small amount in your palms, rub them together, and work it through the middle and ends of your hair. Then blow dry or style the way you normally would.

A few drops are enough. Start through the middle and ends, never at the roots.

Because it is a concentrate, Aveda says you only need a few drops each time. Start smaller than you think. You can always add a drop at the end, and taking oil out means washing your hair again.

Three habits that help
  • Warm the oil between your palms before it touches your hair, so it spreads evenly.
  • Keep it off your scalp and roots. That is where oil shows first.
  • Put it on before every blow dry or hot tool session, not only on the days you remember.

On dry hair: how much to use for fine, thick and curly hair

Fine to medium hair

Aveda's direction is a small amount on the ends of dry hair, to smooth flyaways and add shine. Think of it as a finish. Touch your palms over the ends and any flyaways around your face, and stop there. Fine hair goes flat when oil reaches the lengths near the scalp.

Medium to thick hair

Thicker hair can take more. Aveda recommends working it into the middle and ends of dry hair to smooth frizz and add shine. Do it in two or three sections so the underneath gets some too, not only the top layer.

Curly and coily hair

Aveda lists Miraculous Oil as made for curly and coily hair as well. On dry curls, rub a little between your palms and press it into the ends rather than raking it through, so you keep your curl pattern together. It is a good fix for the dry, dull ends that show up when the weather turns.

Where it fits in your fall routine at home and in the salon

For most people, the simplest routine is the best one. Use it on damp hair every time you blow dry, then a drop on dry ends when frizz or flyaways show up later in the day. If you wear your hair down more in fall and winter, that second step is the one you will notice most.

If you are not sure how much your hair needs, ask at your next appointment. Every Blow Dry and Style at Maximum FX includes a scalp massage and our stress relieving treatment, and your stylist can show you the amount and placement that suit your hair before you buy a bottle.
