Fine Hair That Stays Full Through the Holidays (How Aveda's Pure Abundance Routine Works)

Fine hair looks great when you leave the house. An hour into dinner it sits flat against your head, and the photos from the end of the night show it.

The holidays are a stretch of those nights. Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, and December fills up fast with office parties, family photos and dinners out. Pure Abundance has been Aveda's volume line for fine hair for years, and Aveda recently upgraded the formula with a new botanical blend. It is the routine we reach for when you want volume that lasts past the appetizers.

Why fine hair goes flat halfway through the evening

Fine strands are thin, so it takes very little to weigh them down. Oil from your scalp, leftover styling product and a conditioner made for thicker hair all pull the root flat. Then there is breakage. Fine hair snaps more easily under a brush, and shorter broken pieces make the ends look thinner than they are.

So the routine needs to clean without stripping, condition without coating, and give you something to protect hair while you blow dry it. That is the job Aveda designed Pure Abundance to do, and Aveda finishes it with one styling spray.

The four steps and what Aveda made each one to do

The three Pure Abundance formulas are built around certified organic amaranth seed extract, which Aveda says is a first in its hair care. Aveda distills it to the size of a peptide so it can get inside each strand and plump it evenly from within, for volume that still moves. The collection is vegan and 95 percent naturally derived, with an aroma of jasmine, peppermint, palmarosa and ylang ylang.

Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Shampoo bottle
Step One  ·  Cleanse

Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Shampoo

Aveda made this shampoo to clear product buildup and excess oil, the two things that flatten fine hair at the root first, so strands start with lift before you pick up a dryer.

Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Conditioning Rinse bottle
Step Two  ·  Condition

Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Conditioning Rinse

A lightweight, silicone free conditioner that detangles and helps reduce breakage from brushing, with apple fruit extract and hydrolyzed rice protein for smoothness and shine. Massage it through your lengths after shampooing, then rinse. Please do not skip it on fine hair. Tangled hair breaks when you brush it.

Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Style Prep bottle
Step Three  ·  Prep

Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Style Prep

A light, silicone free spray for damp hair. Aveda made it to add volume, detangle so brushing causes less breakage, and protect fine hair from heat up to 450°F. Mist it at the roots and through the lengths before you blow dry.

Step Four  ·  Style

Aveda Abundant Blowout All Over Volumizing Spray

The step Aveda pairs with Pure Abundance. A heat activated spray that Aveda says doubles volume compared with untreated hair, holds all day through humidity, and protects from heat up to 450°F. Aveda Artist Bea Carmichael's tip: mist the roots, flip your head upside down, spray through the mid lengths and ends, and blow dry in that position.

How to blow dry fine hair for root volume at home

The products set you up. The drying is where the volume gets built. Here is the order we teach clients in the chair.

  • Towel blot, never rub. Then mist Style Prep at the roots and through the lengths, and Abundant Blowout over the top for extra hold.
  • Rough dry with your fingers, lifting at the root, until your hair is mostly dry.
  • Switch to a round brush. Lift each section straight up from the scalp and point the airflow down the strand.
  • Hit each section with the cool shot before you let it go. The shape holds as the hair cools.
  • Flip your part to the other side once you finish. It lifts the root without any extra product.

If your hair still feels heavy, look at what goes on after the dryer. A few drops of a rich oil can undo the whole blowout on fine hair. Use less than you think you need, and keep it on the ends.

Book a blow dry or upstyle before your holiday plans

For the nights that matter most, let us do it. Our Blow Dry and Style service gives you the full version of everything above, and Upstyling is there for events where you want your hair up and off your shoulders. Both are on the menu at South Lamar and Circle C.

Thanksgiving week and the weekends in December book up early, so pick your dates now. While you are in, ask your stylist whether the Pure Abundance routine fits your hair. If a cut would help your volume more, a Maximum FX Haircut includes a consultation and a plan for styling it at home.
