The Honest Guide to Keratin Treatments in Austin (What They Do, What They Don't)

We get asked about keratin treatments every week. And every week we have the same conversation: not a sales pitch, just the truth about what the service does, who it actually works for, and what to expect living in Austin heat.

Here's that conversation in writing.

What It Does (and What It Doesn't)

A keratin treatment coats the hair shaft with a protein-based formula that gets sealed in with heat. The result is smoother cuticles, significantly less frizz, and faster blow-dry times. It is not a chemical relaxer. It does not permanently straighten your hair.

"Keratin doesn't mean straight. It means smooth. For most people, that's actually the better result."

Your natural wave pattern stays. It just behaves. If you're looking for bone-straight results, that's a different service. We'll tell you that before you book.

Is It Right for You?

Great Candidate
  • Thick, coarse, or frizzy hair
  • Wavy hair prone to humidity damage
  • Long blow-dry times (45+ minutes)
  • Anyone who flat-irons regularly
  • Anyone fighting Austin summers daily
Not a Great Fit
  • Very fine or limp hair
  • Heavily bleached or damaged hair
  • Anyone who loves their curls
  • Anyone pregnant or nursing
  • Freshly colored hair (within 2 weeks)

Fine hair is worth calling out specifically. Keratin adds weight. If your hair already falls flat, more weight won't help. We'll tell you this at the consultation, before you commit to anything.

How Long Does It Last in Austin?

Realistic Expectations for Central Texas

Most brands say three to six months. In Austin heat and humidity, plan on 10 to 14 weeks with smart maintenance. Budget for a touch-up around that mark, not at the six-month point. The benefits fade gradually, so you'll feel it before you see it.

One more thing: plan for 72 hours post-treatment with no water, ponytails, or sweat. The formula needs time to fully cure. Book it when you have three calm days ahead of you.

What We Use, and How to Keep It Going

We use Keratin Complex in the salon. It performs consistently across a wide range of textures and holds up in our climate better than most systems we've worked with.

Keratin Complex KCMAX Maximum Keratin Smoothing System
In-Salon Treatment

Keratin Complex KCMAX™ Maximum Keratin Smoothing System

Professional-grade smoothing for thicker, resistant hair types. Maximum frizz control with results that hold up through heat, humidity, and repeated washing.

At home, sulfate-free shampoo is non-negotiable. Sulfates strip the keratin coating fast. The Aveda Smooth Infusion line is what we recommend to our clients. It's gentle on your treatment and keeps frizz in check between appointments.

Aveda Smooth Infusion Anti-Frizz Shampoo
Home Maintenance: Step 1

Aveda Smooth Infusion Anti-Frizz Shampoo

Sulfate-free and keratin-safe. Cleans thoroughly without stripping your treatment, which means your results last significantly longer. Available at both MFX locations.

Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother
Home Maintenance: Step 2

Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother

Apply before blow-drying to protect against heat and humidity. Lightweight enough for fine hair, effective enough for thick textures. It extends your results and cuts your styling time.

Both products are available at our South Lamar and Circle C Ranch locations.
