Help! I dyed my hair at home and now it's orange!

Did you try to save some time and money by doing your own haircolor at home, and now it's a disaster? Colorists see this sort of thing all the time, and rest assured, there is a fix for that. But you'll have to go to a salon for help.

  • It turned orange!

  •  If you picked up a box of color from the grocery store, with a photo of a fabulous blonde, then why did it turn orange on your head? Going more than 2 shades lighter than your natural color (virgin hair - never been colored or chemically treated) will bring out brassy tones. This even happens with professional color at the salon, but we anticipate the outcome and have ways to correct the unwanted brassy tones before you ever get a chance to see it.

  • The Fix: Your colorist will probably do a mixture of highlights and lowlights, or highlights and lowlights with a base color, or an all-over color that's a little darker. It depends on your desired look, and how "bad" it really is.

  • Time in the salon: About 2 - 3 hours

  • Cost: Ranging anywhere from about $100 - $300

  • It turned green!

  • Sounds like you were blonde and trying to go darker with a box of color from the store. This happens because box dye is not formulated for this, it's designed for people with virgin hair trying to go one or two shades lighter or darker. Why green? The dye has an extra amount of "Ash" tone in it to account for folks who have dark brown hair trying to go lighter with that box. When you want to go darker over highlights or blonde color, you need "Warm" tones, not "Ash".

  • The Fix: Your colorist will probably do a "tint back", which means a two step process.  A color filler in a red shade is applied all over and then a brown shade on top of that. Another option would be to do lowlights and an all over color, with a redish brown shade. The red will counteract the green and balance it out.

  • Time in the salon: About 2 - 3 hours

  • Cost: Ranging anywhere from about $100 - $300
