Our adopted elephant, Malkia!
By: Kylie Lacey
Here at Maximum FX salon, it’s not just hair we care about! We all came together as a team to adopt a baby elephant named Malkia from the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya.
The DSWT was created by David Sheldrick’s wife, Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick, after David passed away in 1977. She created the trust wanting to carry on his legacy. David was known in the community for his work with other local wildlife foundations. The DSWT takes in orphaned elephants found in the wild to raise, nurse and someday integrate back into the wild. So far, they have successfully integrated more than 200 elephants back into the wild!
At the DSWT they have a program called the orphans project, in which people from all over the world can donate a minimum of $50 to adopt a baby elephant or rhino and receive monthly updates on how he\she is doing. This program helps purchase supplies and food for the orphans.
The orphan elephant that we adopted, as a team, is named Malkia. The keepers at the DSWT say that Malkia is very bossy and has a big personality. She is playful, mischievous, and is always trying to steal extra milk from the keepers. Adopting her has been such a joy for the salon. We love to receive photos and updates about her. Even though it may be small, we feel as though we have made a difference. We encourage everyone to look into this program, and you too can help these orphaned elephants have a safe and loving home.
