Warmer weather is here, and in Austin, TX we are blessed with lots of sunshine. You probably have noticed that your hair naturally gets a little lighter in the summer months just from being outside in the sun. Remember how light your hair used to get when you were a kid? Well, it won’t do that naturally anymore if you sit inside an office all day at work. Want that summer color without having to become a lifeguard? I can help!

Blondes: If you have naturally light hair, and just want a sun-kissed look, the best way to achieve it is with highlights. At MFX we have many highlighting options, ranging from a full highlight to just a few pieces around your face.

Brunettes: Ombre color is very in right now, and brunettes pull this trendy color off the best! We simply highlight the ends of your hair and leave the top your natural color. If you want to go more dramatic, there are options for that as well.

Redheads: Naturally auburn hair looks fantastic with some copper highlights, and naturally copper hair works well with golden blonde tones. Of course, we take your skin tone and eye color into account when creating the right shade for you, so talk with your colorist about your options.

The color team at MFX is here to answer your questions, and we love to talk about hair color! Give us a call today to come in for a quick complimentary consultation. 512-472-3331

My favorite time of the year has to be the South by Southwest festival. While it may be hectic for local Austinites to battle extra traffic, parking issues, lots of crowds downtown, and long waits at restaurants, you cannot deny that SXSW makes for spectacular people watching.

I’ve noticed a few hair trends (not to mention some very interesting fashion choices) worth noting.

Beachy Waves with Braids – To get the look with a long layered haircut, braid just an inch of your hair along your hairline down to one ear on one side only. Scrunch remaining hair with Phomollient and Be Curly Style Prep, then let air dry. The ultimate wake up and go hairstyle.

Messy Ponytail – Pile all of your hair on top of your head, let some wispy pieces fall out. Or do a low side pony, and tease the ends to add texture. Spray with Air Control or Control Force for extra hold.

Hats! Cowboy hats and Fedoras are the most popular. Helps keep the sun off of your face and protects your haircolor from harmful UV rays.

Bright Haircolor – Fashion reds, pinks, purples, yellows, blues… Either an all over color or just a fun pop of brightness, the trend seems to be the brighter the better. NEON hair, anyone?

Follow our “Spotted at SXSW” board on Pinterest for more great SXSW hair and fashion photos.

Maybe this is you…
“I have been coloring my grays for years, and I think it’s time to let it go gray!”
“I’m tired of being blonde, I want to go back to my natural brown!”
“I dyed my hair black from a box at the grocery store – now what?”

First of all, I highly recommend scheduling a complimentary color consultation with one of our color specialists. These appointments take under 15 minutes and can answer your questions in detail.

In the meantime, I can talk a little about your options! In the gray hair situation, you really can go gray gracefully. Depending on the color of your dyed hair, you can switch to doing lowlights or highlights instead of an all over color. This process covers some of your grays, but leaves some to grow in. Each time you come to the salon, your colorist can put in fewer and fewer lowlights/highlights, until most of your hair is gray. You may want to continue to do a few blended lowlights/highlights, with a glaze, every few months to enhance your natural color.

For you blondes going darker, you have some options as well, depending on how quickly you want to go back to dark. For instant gratification, you can do an all over brown, which usually takes two steps or more (on the same day). For a more gradual approach, you can get lowlights (one or two darker colors) and tone down the remaining blonde with a glaze. This gives you a lighter brown or darker blonde effect. If you choose this route, you can go darker on your next salon visit if you like, or if you change your mind and want to go back lighter again, your colorist will have an easier time than if you went with the first option.

Box color from the grocery store going back lighter: you might not like what I have to say… This is by far the most challenging feat for your colorist. I take that back, box HENNA from the health food store is the hardest: that’s the stuff that gives me nightmares. You’ll need to endure strand tests, porosity tests, possible breakage from highlights or color correcting, and may need a serious haircut to get your hair to look healthy. I usually give an estimate of 6 months to a year to correct this color, depending on how many times you’ve dyed your hair, what product you’ve used, if your hair had damage before, etc. In other words, please don’t try this at home. If you’re already in this situation, there are options for you, but we’ll need a thorough consultation before we can come up with a game plan.

“Gray hair is the bane of my existence. It seems like the week after I have my hair colored the grays are already back! And why are they always the worst around my temples and forehead – right where everyone can see them the most?!”

I hear this on a daily basis. As a Colorist, covering your gray is one of my main priorities. Our color team here at MFX has come up with a few ways to ensure those grays stay away as long as possible… Adding a special gray covering agent to your regular color formula, using small papers on your temples to keep the color from drying out while you process in the salon, letting your color stay on the maximum time of 45 minutes… These are all great ways to help the hair color really cover those pesky grays. But what happens when new ones start to grow in?

Here’s an idea. All me to introduce you to the 3-Week New Growth Touchup service. Did you know that now you can come to the salon every 3 weeks to touch up your new hair growth, and pay only $40. This service does not come with a blowdry, but you are welcome to blowdry your own hair using our tools and products, or you can opt to leave with damp, towel-dried hair.

You can also pair this 3-week service with our MFX Membership – Our yearly membership ($100) includes 12 Free Monthly Blowdry & Styles, and you are welcome to use your Free Blowdry with your 3-week color appointment. (With the membership, you also save 5% off your service, making the $40 touch up cost only $38.)

If you have any questions about this, or wonder if this is right for you, please let me know, I’d love to help! You can call the salon at 512-472-3331, or leave a comment below!

We can’t stop the gray hair from growing, but we CAN stop the gray hair from showing!
