As we all know, red heads are the hardest to keep vibrant and shiny. We all love the vibrancy of the color right when we walk out of the salon, but never can maintain the look after multiple shampoo washes. There is a solution for that, if you are wanting to vamp up the tone of red in your hair and put back some richness into it we have a demi permanent hair color line which is a gloss that adds intense shine to the hair and contains a naturally derived anti-oxidant to help protect hair against UV aggression with a blend of protective plant oils. It enhances the color by putting a copper, or bright red tone to the hair to just refresh that faded red. This demi permanent treatment will last for about 4-6 weeks depending on how often you shampoo. Another at home remedy that would also maintain the vibrancy of the red is our Aveda Color Conserve shampoo and conditioner. Following that line we have a Color Conserve Strengthening Treatment that is going to strengthen and repair hair. This treatment has morikue protein, sunflower, and macadamia nut oils to help seal in color with reflective shine. After shampooing your hair you are going to towel dry your hair and apply the Strengthening Treatment from roots to ends, and leave on for 5 minutes. One of my all time favorites, is our latest new product the Color Conserve Daily Color Protect. This product is a leave in conditioner that adds immense shine to the hair. It triple protects your hair color by sealing in the color to protect it from uv damage, it also has a detangler in it which is going to conditon your hair while locking in the color from fadage for up to 6 weeks.

Occasionally, our stylists will get asked to style their guest’s hair without using any styling products. It may be that they feel their hair gets too “greasy” looking, or it weighs their hair down, or they just don’t like the “feel” of their hair with product in it. We asked our expert stylists to weigh in on this issue.

Erinn – “First I would ask why they don’t want to use product. If it’s because they think their hair gets too greasy, I’d say to keep the product off of the root area. If she says it’s because products don’t work on her hair, I’d say we need to find the right ones for her hair type. Maybe she just needs tips on how to cocktail different products and apply them properly.”

Jessica – “For color-treated hair, you MUST use a damage/color protectant on your hair before blowdrying/heat-styling or you can kiss that $200 dye-job goodbye. I understand if a guest is allergic to a certain product, but there are plenty of others out there to try. Being vegan, I won’t use hair products containing animal ingredients, but Aveda makes so many vegan products, that this isn’t really an issue.”

Melinda – “Small amounts of product can make a big difference – in protecting the hair and giving you a more polished look. If your fear is weighing down the hair, it might be an issue of too much product or using the wrong product. Ask your stylist what they recommend. It’s most important to protect the hair from sun and heat damage – even if you wear your hair more natural.”

Kady – “I would ask her what she didn’t like about products, whether it was greasiness, dryness, weighing it down… Applying products on the ends first and then working your way up helps. If her hair feels too dry after using products, she might be using the wrong shampoo and conditioner. If the product doesn’t work like it says it should, try applying it from the underneath to the top in smaller sections.”

We hope that helps! Ask your hair product questions in the comments below!

Aveda is consistently recognized by VegNews Magazine and Peta as being a cruelty-free company, and they are the only major company with a professional color line that is completely vegan and cruelty-free (not tested on animals). Truth is, Aveda makes most of their products totally vegan, so it’s easier to list the products that ARE NOT vegan. Individual salons and spas may use non-Aveda products in their services (such as waxing, manicures & pedicures) so it’s a good idea to call ahead to double check before you make your appointment.

Here is a handy guide to print and take with you the next time you’re headed to the salon! All Aveda color, hair, skin, and body care products are completely vegan EXCEPT THE FOLLOWING:

You will find Beeswax or Honey in the following products (CURRENT LIST AS OF OCTOBER 2012):

Beeswax:
Lip Saver SPF
Lip Shine
Light Elements Shaping Wax
Light Elements Texturizing Crème
Lip Glaze
Lip Tint SPF 15
Nourish-Mint Renewing Lip Treatment
Nourish-Mint Sheer Mineral Lip Color
Nourish-Mint Smoothing Lip Color
Uruku Lip Pigment
Uruku Color Gloss

Honey:
Men’s Pure-Formance Firm Hold Gel
Phomollient
Pure Abundance Volumizing Clay Conditioner
Pure Abundance Volumizing Hair Spray
Pure Abundance Volumizing Hair Potion
Pure Abundance Volumizing Shampoo

According to Aveda: “While our goal as a company is to use 100% plant or flower derived ingredients, we have not found substitutes for these particular ingredients at this time.” I have some suggestions… Agave nectar, coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil…

Sticking to a schedule for your hair maintenance can be confusing… every person is different! We’ve put together a guideline for haircuts and haircolor that should help unravel the mystery.

Pixie Cut / Men’s Hair – 4-6 weeks. Ok, ladies and gentlemen, short cuts need lots of lovin’ from your stylist. Around 4 weeks your hair will start looking and feeling thicker (its growing). If you’re lucky your salon offers a complimentary clean-up (MFX does) and this will help you cut stay nice and clean around the edges.

Medium Length / Bob – 4-6 weeks. The beautiful classy bob, how I love theeeee. So the beauty of the bob is a balance of weight and a nice clean hairline, if yours is that short. If you let your hair continue to grow you will be attacked by the evil flip, so careful out there.

Layered / Long Hair – 6-8 weeks. Layers help you achieve volume and allow hair to move around. The flowy, blended or fun and choppy will start just laying around if you don’t visit your stylist to get trimmed and lightened up.

Rapunzel / Mermaid / Extra Long Hair – 8-12 weeks. OK, OK, I know you want long, pretty hair and you don’t want a scissor-happy stylist to cut it all off. If you don’t treat yourself to regular haircuts it will break off anyway. Long hair takes a beating; not only because it’s been on your head for years, but also because it gets curled, flat-ironed, crimped (We know there’s some “crimpers” out there) and let’s not forget the hair bands and headbands that hold every hair back and out of your face… that over time break or pull out your hair (be gentle, be gentle). Visit your stylist for a baby trim so that your hair will look and feel healthy and continue to grow.

Highlights – 6-8 weeks. The more highlighted your hair, the sooner you’ll need to come back for maintenance. Mega-blondes should lean closer to the 6 week mark, and those of you with just a few subtle strands of color blended in with your natural color can stretch it out to 2 months.

All Over Color - 3-6 weeks. All over color that is covering gray will usually require a 3 week new growth touch up, or at the most a 6 week touch up. All over color that is more than 2 shades lighter or darker than your natural color will require maintenance no later than 6 weeks. If you’re within a shade or two of your natural color, you may be able to stretch it out a little bit longer.

“Bleach” Blonde – 3-5 weeks. You will get bands of orange in your hair if you go longer than 5 weeks for those platinum all-over blondes. 3 to 4 weeks is ideal – there is enough new growth to keep from your colorist from overlapping (which = breakage) but not so much that it’ll turn into corrective color every time.

Lowlights – 8 – 10 weeks. Lowlights require much less maintenance than highlights, because they generally fade a couple of shades lighter as time goes on, and blend into your natural hair. Lowlights are an excellent way to blend gray hair for those people who find it hard to come into the salon every 6 weeks.

There are plenty of places to park your car at our South Congress location. Parking on the street out front of the salon is limited to 1 hour. For longer appointments, we also have a parking lot behind the salon. Follow the driveway next door and take a right. This is our dedicated retail parking area. If this is full for some reason, you may use the 5 story parking garage adjacent to this lot. See you soon!
