Behind the Scenes: 2013 Catwalk for Water Hair Show

Written By:  Whitney Labrecque

What goes into a runway production with four hair models?

  1. concept meetings
  2. model search
  3. wardrobe
  4. hair
  5. makeup
  6. music
  7. trial runs (hair/makeup/wardrobe)

Once a concept or theme is agreed upon by the hair team, the model search begins. The models’ hair generally determines a look or hair design. We often look for models willing to cut and color their hair in support of the overall concept. Model searches can be complicated because we ideally prefer a diverse group for interest sake.

When it comes to wardrobe sometimes we are fortunate enough to work with local designers, or if the concept requires it we may create our own costumes.

The trial runs are where we really pinpoint the hair, makeup and wardrobe. The team determines what works best for which model to ensure a smooth run the day of the event.

The creative teams generally splits up into two teams the day of the event — makeup and hair. Other members of the salon team will also participate and help the creative team with prepping hair, makeup, wardrobe, the day of the event.

Final touches are made minutes before the models walk. Weeks of preparation and close to 50 hours of hard work explodes onto the stage for a 5 minute extravaganza. This is where we get to see all of our hard work come to life on the runway.

MFX Perks

Team MFX’s goal everyday is to be your “daymaker”; we believe in always going above and beyond our client’s expectations.  Knowing our philosophy revolves around our clients, its easy to understand why we have several programs dedicated to rewarding our clients for their patronage to our salon.

Unknown-1

Aveda Pure Privilege — This program allows you to earn points when you purchase Aveda products that can later be traded in for merchandise or prizes.  MFX keeps your Pure Privilege information on file so you earn points on every product purchase every time.  Aveda stores, institutes and salons are NOT required to participate in Pure Privilege; MFX chooses to participate in order to reward our clients.

imagesRewardy – The Rewardy Stamp Card app allows you to carry an electronic stamp card with you at all times, unlike paper stamp card that are often lost or forgotten at home.  MFX wants to reward you for your Aveda product purchases; for every $20 you spend we will stamp your card electronically and after nine punches you will earn $20 towards an Aveda product purchase.  Get your app at http://www.rewardy.com/get-app

MFX Preferred Membership — With our membership you will receive 5% off service purchases (including spa services); 10% off product purchases; it includes 1 complimentary style/blow dry service per calendar month for 12 months; UNLIMITED complimentary makeup applications; you’ll be  the first to learn about events, special offers, sampling opportunities and news from MFX; and an invitation to exclusive bi-annual membership appreciation events.  Our membership is $100 annually and worth every penny.

We would never want to limit the ways in which we reward our clients — in 2012 we sent 2 clients plus a guest each on all expense paid trips to Cancun, Mexico as part of a client referral contest — so its safe to say you will see other programs pop up that will be dedicated to making your day.

Touched: A Sensory Experience

By:  Linda Weisman

The sense of touch is just one of our five senses and arguably the most personal. We come in contact with each other on a daily basis in many different ways and for many different reasons. Touch can be relaxing, therapeutic, reassuring, comforting, healing and energizing; the stylists in our salon use touch in a variety of positive ways on a daily basis. Just think without the sense of touch we would not be able to feel a reassuring pat on the back, a therapeutic relaxing massage or a comforting hug!

hand3At Maximum FX a sensory experience is a part of every service and mostly involves the sense of touch! Our clients all receive a head and neck massage before their haircut service begins, and everyone receives a hand massage during their blow-dry service. Clients love both experiences, but most testimonials reference their amazing hand massage! That may be because the simple act of a hand massage can be healing and uplifting — it can lift your mood and relax you, it can even give the immune system a boost — and all this through the sense of touch.

Touch is essential to our survival and provides us with an “uplifting feel good” frame of mind. So the next time a person extends a welcoming hand to you, puts a reassuring hand on your shoulder, or hugs you, don’t shy away!  Accept the offer of a pat or hug and think about how it makes you feel; you’ll be amazed how improved it makes you feel afterwards. HUGS!

Lend A Helping Hand: Pink Ribbon Hand Relief Supports Breast Cancer Research

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Aveda is donating to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Aveda cares about those affected by breast cancer, so we donate $4 from the sale of each special-edition Pink Ribbon Hand Relief™ product, up to a maximum of $270,000, to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation® to support cruelty-free research. The foundation is an independent, not-for-profit organization founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder, dedicated to funding clinical and genetic breast cancer research at medical institutions worldwide.

Because Aveda cares about our environment and the animals who share it, donations from Aveda North America fund cruelty-free research* that explores environmental causes and links to breast cancer, like exposure to toxic chemicals and pollutants. For many years now, we’ve funded a specific research project at Columbia University that studies the relationship between environmental exposures and genetic susceptibility to breast cancer. In 2011 the project has evolved to include research to help better understand when breast cancer susceptibility begins.

Together, we’re making a difference. Since 2004, Aveda has supported a contribution of over $1.83 million to the Foundation. It’s money that comes not only from corporate contributions, but also from employees and guests who donate through Aveda network fundraising activities each October.

More than 88 cents of each dollar donated to the Foundation goes directly to research and awareness programs.
