Three best places in Austin to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patty’s Day is a huge celebration, and while Austin may not dye Lady Bird Lake green like Chicago or Savannah, we certainly still know how to have a good time on March 17th. Here are three of the best places to celebrate tomorrow, whether you’re Irish or not:

  • Fado Irish Pub & Restaurant – One of Austin’s most popular Irish pubs, Fado will be hosting its 15th annual Outdoor St. Patty’s Day festival with live music and Irish dancers starting at noon; doors at 7am. All ages from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, ages 21+ only from 3:00 pm to close, ticket required after 10am. Located: 214 W. 4th Street
  • Dog and Duck Pub – Hosting its 22nd Annual St. Patrick’s Day Party, the venue will have live music from 11:30am-10pm. Free, rain or shine. Located at: 406 W. 17th Street
  • St. Patrick’s Dance – From 7:30pm – 11pm, enjoy light refreshments, dance lessons (at 8pm) and festive decorations in honor of the occasion. Located at: Austin Uptown Dance, 8868 Research Blvd.

Street Chic – Hair Trends Spotted At SXSW 2012

Here at MFX SoCo, we have a great view for people watching. My favorite time of the year has to be the South by Southwest festival. While it may be hectic for local Austinites to battle extra traffic, parking issues, lots of crowds downtown, and long waits at restaurants, you cannot deny that SXSW makes for spectacular people watching.

I’ve noticed a few hair trends (not to mention some very interesting fashion choices) worth noting.

Beachy Waves with Braids – To get the look with a long layered haircut, braid just an inch of your hair along your hairline down to one ear on one side only. Scrunch remaining hair with Phomollient and Be Curly Style Prep, then let air dry. The ultimate wake up and go hairstyle.

Messy Ponytail – Pile all of your hair on top of your head, let some wispy pieces fall out. Or do a low side pony, and tease the ends to add texture. Spray with Air Control or Control Force for extra hold.

Hats! Cowboy hats and Fedoras are the most popular. Helps keep the sun off of your face and protects your haircolor from harmful UV rays.

Bright Haircolor – Fashion reds, pinks, purples, yellows, blues… Either an all over color or just a fun pop of brightness, the trend seems to be the brighter the better. NEON hair, anyone?

MFX Partners with Dress For Success

This year Maximum FX ,in partnership with Dress for Success, will be hosting the first annual Bra-lapalooza Bra drive to provide new bra undergarments to individuals participating in the Dress for Success program. Dress for Success is a program for women who are often from an abusive or unfortunate home situation that would otherwise not have the resources to start a new career.

While participating in Dress for Success these women receive assistance in attaining interview attire for potential career opportunities. They are taken one-on-one with a Dress for success personal shopper and shown what is appropriate interview attire and fitted for one or more interviewing suits. They are also provided with job training and education as well as post-job training. Dress for Success also offers mentoring and counseling services as well as an ongoing career development program. These services are provided at no cost to the clients.

After meeting with Dress for Success Executive Director, Judy Chambers, we established that there is more than enough clothing, however there are a shortage of undergarmets—specifically bras. The goal of the Bra-lapalooza bra drive is to gather new bras for the clients participating in the program. Unfortunately some of these ladies have never even owned a bra, therefore have no idea the difference that such a small undergarment could make. With help from our community we know that we can make a difference for these women.

Beginning today through December 15th, clients who donate at least one new bra on their next salon visit will receive a complimentary Aveda Beauty On Demand service, a $35 value.  For a description of these services, click here.
