Four Tips For Red Shades Hair Color

1) If you’re going red, choose a warm red that’s a little bit lighter than your natural shade. It will give you a nice glow.

2) If you’re a naturally a brunette, try a rich ruby red. It will most surely be eye-catching.

3) If you have a lighter or fair complexion and green eyes, try going with a true copper. Sophisticated. Enough said.

4) Do you have light skin and blue eyes? Feeling a little daring? Go with fire engine red. Only you can pull this one off!

Remember, a little red goes a long way.  If you want to get your feet wet, introduce yourself to red shades by having your colorist add a few red highlights.

Javier Herrera talks Fashion Week, fall trends and the New York subway!

Designer styles ranged from very simplistic to extravagant fore-runners.

Victorian cameos were used an inspiration for this messy, modernized look.

Ever wondered what Fashion Week, the largest fashion event of the year, is like? This year, Javier Herrera of MFX had the opportunity to attend Fashion Week with Aveda to prepare models for the shows of some of the season’s hottest designers. After long hours, chaotic schedules and the subway, he survived to tell the tale!

The shows Herrera participated in during his four day stay were Sofia Sizzi and the Designer’s Premier, which included seven up-and-coming designers. He spent long hours interpreting the designer’s inspirations into a hairstyle that could hit the runway.  “[Days would begin] early in the morning, and go until late at night… One day, I was there from 5:30 in the morning until 8:00 at night. Not necessarily doing hair the whole time because we’d have to wait for other shows to finish, but I didn’t want to leave so I stayed there!… We started off backstage and worked on preparing the models. On one show, there were eighty models and thirty-five hairstylists. We were backstage preparing for the show for three hours before it started.” With 115 people in very small, cramped spaces, Herrera says things would get chaotic and crazy causing stress for him, the other stylists and the models. “There was a little bit of stress, but it all worked out in the end,” he says.

For Herrera, the best part of fashion week was being present to witness the great diversity of the designers, from “really simple couture to very vanguard.” The most difficult part? “Getting around. Because I don’t know New York very well, so it was difficult knowing where I was going for different shows. Or just being patient, having to be there for long periods of time without necessarily doing anything.”

Preparing the models could take up to 3 hours before showtime.

And of course, the most important part of fashion week: upcoming trends. Herrera predicts there to be a vast and broad range of styles headed our way this fall, many of which were present at the shows he participated with. When asked about what he sees for the season, Herrera says, “Very broad. I’m thinking a lot of the trends I’ve been noticing are 70’s. Texturized, messy hair. And of course, we did Hollywood glamour waves at the shows also. [Sofia Sizzi’s] show was a ‘take-off’ of Victorian style, but we modernized it by making it messy. She showed us pictures of [Victorian] cameos as her inspiration, and then we had to put a twist on it to make it more modern.”

Would Herrera participate in Fashion Week again? “I would definitely do it again. And I wouldn’t take my suitcases on the subway! That was a bad move, but I learned and I wouldn’t do that part again!”

Maximum FX Summer Aveda Hair Tips from Javier and Erica

Summer can be the cruelest season of all for hair–chlorine and UV from swimming and falling behind on regular trims (who has time when you’re having fun?). We asked Javier Herrera, Owner and Cutting Educator, and Erica Colon, Color Educator for their top hair tips.

How should girls prep hair for summer?
Get an in-salon professional treatment such as Aveda’s color gloss service ($60 scheduled alone, $40 add-on with haircut) to prep and help protect hair from the damaging effects of sun, salt and chlorine while enhancing color tonality and shine.  Aveda’s color gloss seals the hair cuticle to maintain moisture, add body and help reduce breakage caused by damage. It’s so important to strengthen hair to create a barrier of protection against the damaging elements of the summer sun.

How can you prevent flat hair from going limp in humid weather (and conversely, what’s the best way to prevent frizz if you’re curly)?
Flat hair tends to go limp in humid weather because moisture in the air weighs hair down.  To prevent moisture overload, prep hair with a shampoo and conditioner that add volume and use a styling product that enhances volume and creates texture from the root. My  must-have styling product for defeating limp hair is Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam, which provides long lasting volume, lift, and texture.

Curly hair responds differently to moisture and summer humidity–it creates more frizz and flyaways. The key to battling summer frizz is to use a styling product that acts as a barrier between hair and humidity, like Aveda Smooth Infusion Style Prep Smoother, which coats and conditions hair to seal in its natural moisture, giving curls structure and blocking out excess moisture in the air. The result is smooth, frizz-free curls for up to 12 hours.

What’s the ONE most important hair service for summer?
A deep conditioning treatment to keep hair healthy and beautiful during the summer months.

Is hair as affected by sun as skin is?
Sunlight (UVA/UVB) exposes hair to free radicals that break down protein structures such as melanin. This can weaken hair and lead to color fading. Like skin, sun exposure depletes hair of its natural moisture and leaves it looking and feeling dry and dull.  Aveda’s Sun Care line which includes the Sun Care Protective Veil, Sun Care Hair and Body Cleanser, and the Sun Care After-Sun Masque is an amazing lineup of products developed to battle damage caused by sun exposure.
