Aveda's alternatives for damaging skin procedures

Microdermabrasion was named the fourth most popular cosmetic procedure in America for 2010 by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Google “microdermabrasion” and you’ll find the words “instant face-lift” and “rejuvenation.” You’ll also find “sand-papering” and “mild injury.”

Next, search “chemical peel”- a procedure performed 1.1 MILLION times in 2010. WebMD will tell you a chemical peel is “a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin”… closely followed by “which causes it to ‘blister’ and eventually peel off.” Ahh… Just another relaxing day at the spa, I guess!

Maybe it’s just me, but beauty companies seem to leave these parts off of their advertisements. How could two things which damage a layer of skin to reveal “younger, healthier, refreshed” skin be two of the top five cosmetic procedures in America?!

Still think the procedures may be worth the benefits? Take a closer look at how each procedure works to give you the “desired” results…

Microdermabrasion removes the stratum corneum, or your skin’s barrier layer, in a sand-papering fashion, tricking your body into believing that there has been a mild injury. To heal your damaged skin, your body automatically sends new, healthy skin cells to the surface to replace the lost ones. Don’t worry- the treatment is usually painless and doesn’t irritate the skin greatly. Your face should only be red for about thirty minutes to an hour, unless of course you experience some of the other symptoms like swelling near the eyes, redness streaking, blood-spotting or discoloration- some will only take 4 days to heal, others will be permanent. A four-day recovery from a facial? Eh, no big deal. Maybe you’ll only get skin flaking, itching and dryness.

Chemical peels apply a chemical solution to your skin, sometimes glycolic acid, forming a controlled wound allowing new skin to rush to the surface. “What’s glycolic acid used for?” you might ask. It’s used for polymer self-dissolving stitches, industrial appliances, leather tanning, water treatment… Oh, for your face? It removes excess oil. After this procedure, you should stay out of the sun and avoid soap entirely. You should also schedule your next appointment, because once you opt out of glycolic sessions for regular maintenance, you will most likely experience an outburst of acne. Same side effects as before too: skin crusting, scabbing, flaking, peeling, stinging and discoloring.
