Winter Weather and your Skin

Now that winter is slowly creeping up on us, it’s time to change your skin care routine…
It’s always around this time of year that I notice the skin on my face and hands are noticeably flaky and drier to the touch. There are several factors to take into consideration, less humidity in the air, indoor heating can really affect the skin, and excessive hand washing to ward of cold and flu germs.
A few tips to keep in mind to help your skin from feeling like you’re petting a lizard are to immediately moisturize your skin after cleansing. I’d recommend using a heavier moisturizer than you would normally use in the summertime. Exfoliate only once a week rather than the recommended three to four times during the summer (assuming you are using a gentle, daily exfoliant like the Aveda Tourmaline Exfoliating Cleanser), and lastly consider switching to a gentle cleanser (try the Aveda All Sensitive Cleanser) a few times a week if you notice your skin not improving or feeling more dehydrated. And lastly, now is the time to think about getting a body scrub/wrap, like the Rosemary Mint Body Wrap. It’s the perfect solution for exfoliating away all of the summers sweat and dry, dull skin.

Your body will Thank You :)

Aveda’s Dual Exfoliation Treatment

Facial TreatmentI recently had the opportunity to take an advanced skin care class to learn all about Aveda’s newest facial, The Dual Exfoliation Treatment. I was amazed at how immediate, and visible the results were with just one treatment. The treatment combines Aveda’s naturally derived mechanical and biochemical exfoliation methods into one facial that visibly transforms the skin through the process of dual exfoliation. The treatment results in improved skin texture, clarity and radiance; smoothed appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; and refined pores. Your skin will look fresh, smooth and your make-up application will also look amazing.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

We’ve said good-bye to winter and spring, and now summer is finally here!  May is skin cancer awareness month and now is the time to get tested for skin cancer!   There are many resources that offer free skin cancer screenings this month. Take advantage of the free resources and be prepared for the long hot months ahead.

1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime! Here are some things to keep in mind before you step out for the day:

Know when you are at risk.  When the sun is out, whether its early morning or the sun is setting, your skin is vulnerable.  Your skin can receive harmful effects from sun exposure even from the sun’s reflection and through windows.  Remember this when you are sitting in traffic!  You might not be protected.

Avoid peak midday sun exposure, which falls between the hours of 10am and 3pm.  The UVB intensity is the highest during these times.

Cover up with sun protection clothing.  Retailers such as REI have many options.  I also recommend wearing a sun hat that covers the skin on your scalp, and ears and provides shade for your face.

It’s also important to wear UV-blocking sunglasses to protect your eyes.  The skin around the eye area is the most delicate, and tends to show age and sun damage the fastest.

Use the right sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection and a lip balm with SPF.  Reapply as often as necessary, especially if you are exercising or swimming.  Even if you use a moisturizer in the morning with SPF the effectiveness will decrease by the time lunch time roles around so reapply even if you are not at the beach or pool.

Here are a couple of links to find out the nearest dermatologist that is offering free skin cancer screening and also Sun AWARE’s blog which covers new information related to tanning and sun protection. and

Have a beautiful day and protect your skin! It can save your life!

Pumpkin Pies, Pumpkin Lattes, & Pumpkin Facials

Let me just start this by saying, I love all things pumpkin! It’s the beginning of a new season, and what better way to get your skin ready for fall with one of Mother Nature’s most beneficial gourds, the pumpkin…

Pumpkin makes a wonderful facial mask for all skin types, especially helpful to environmentally damaged or sensitive skin. It’s high in Vitamin A(skin healing), Vitamin C(anti-oxidant), and Zinc(repairs damaged tissue). Pumpkin soothes, moisturizes, and acts as a carrier by working with the other mask ingredients to absorb deeper into the skin, intensifying the results leaving the skin feeling refreshed and hydrated.

Help! I just had the worst brow wax of my life! Now what?

eyebrows, eyebrow wax, bad eyebrow wax, maximum fx, mfx salon, maximumfx

I know first hand of that experience…we’ve all had a bad brow wax at some point in our lives, and it’s very upsetting and frustrating. It also makes you wary of just anybody waxing them again. First of all, I recommend that you do some brow wax research in your city. Look online or ask coworkers, friends or even the gal at your favorite place to shop, eat or get coffee. Most people would love to share their favorite Aesthetician story with you.

In all honesty, it can take a few months for the hair to grow back unless the same area has been waxed for  several years. My recommendation in the meantime is to buy a brow kit that includes a shadow, pomade and an angled brow brush to fill in the area that was over-waxed. You can pick one of these up at Ulta or Sephora. It will probably take a little time to get used to starkness of the shape but you may actually like the look.

Now for some advice about finding the right technician. As I mentioned earlier, do your research, and find someone that you are willing to trust. Make sure the technician hands you a mirror and has a brief consultation about frequency of waxing/tweezing, challenges, concerns and or overall desired outcome. It’s perfectly ok to bring in an old photo, or pre brow wax disaster to give the technician an idea of your desired brow shape. Bringing in photos of celebrities is okay, but let’s be honest. Who doesn’t want Megan Fox’s or Angelina’s brows? In some cases, this can be accomplished, but in many cases it can’t. Sometimes we just gotta work with what we have…

There is a brow wax technican out there for everyone, it just takes a little work finding him or her!

Best of luck and as always, I welcome any brow wax questions you might have!
