About Courtney Byrd

“How long have we been around?” and many more simple MFX Q’s answered!

You trust us with your hair and your skin, and you probably even divulge some of your biggest secrets to your stylist sometimes (don’t worry, our lips are sealed!)… But how much do you know about the salon where you spend about 45 minutes every 6 weeks? Here you’ll find the answers to five of the most basic, most-asked questions by our clients, both old and new:

“How long has MFX been here?”

MFX opened its doors in 1991 on Guadalupe Street by Jacalyn Luth. In 2002, MFX’s current owners, Javier Herrera and Chris Murphy, opened the South Congress location with Circle C following in 2006, and we’ve been “keeping Austin beautiful” ever since!

“How many people work for this company?”

We are a small, tight-knit family, usually consisting of between 25-40 members. We laugh, we cry, we bicker, and we do it all together… and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Do you only use Aveda products?”

For skin and hair care – yes. Aveda partners with salons that “share [their] vision and respect for the Earth, passion for the best creative and technical work, and nurturing, high-touch care.” We support this mission so entirely that we only feature Aveda for skin and hair care (plus, when a product is so amazing, why try anything else?). We do, however, feature OPI nail color (SoCo only), as well as seasonal or otherwise temporary inventory of other products, such as jewelry by local designers or clothing by indigenous tribes.

“Why did I get SoCo/Circle C if I called my specific location’s phone number?”

We do have separate phone numbers for each physical location, but we have our phone lines set up so that the lines ring at each location simultaneously. This allows our Guest Care Coordinators to not only answer your call more quickly, especially during high traffic times, but they are also equipped to edit appointment and client information for both salons. Just another way we implement our core value of “teamwork!”

“How hard is it to get an appointment?”

Like many businesses, we do have our high volume times (some Saturdays may book out weeks in advance… and around the holidays, some clients start booking in October!). BUT, we always do our best to make sure you get the first appointment available at a time that work best for you. We also make sure we give you every opportunity possible to get an appointment; we provide chairside pre-booking with every appointment, send our e-mail-list clients last minute appointment spots and also have a running wait list for any day that’s booked solid, in case there is a last minute cancellation.

Who is your most experienced stylist? Plus more answers to often asked questions.

At MFX, we see a lot of people in a day, and we also happen to get a lot of questions from you.  Over time, we noticed that some of the questions that we get asked are more frequent than others.  Funny how that happens?   So, we decided to put together a quick blog that answers are top five most often asked questions by you.   We hope that our most-frequented clients get answers to some things they’ve been dying to ask, while our newest clients find out even more about our salon.

“Who is your most experienced stylist?”

We do have some stylists that have been in the game a little longer than others –whether they’ve been with MFX or elsewhere. But, all of our stylists must complete the same intensive training procedures and prove their skills before hitting the salon floor, so rest assured that even if your stylist is one of the new kids on the block, we believe in their skills and want you to know you can trust their abilities. Sometimes, our newbies are better at certain skills than our more experienced team members; everyone has their own specific skill set! So if you’re ever unsure about whom to book a certain appointment with, feel free to ask any of our Guest Care Coordinators. They know the stylist’s skills like the back of their hand, and can get you with the one that’s best for you.   Some of our most experienced team members include Erica (Color), Jake (Cutting), Cassie (Color) at our Circle C Ranch location, and Javier (Cutting), Melinda (Cutting), Kendra (Cutting), Jessica (Color), Erinn (Color) at our South Congress location.

“Can I just walk in/Can’t you just squeeze me in?”

Sometimes, you might get lucky with a walk-in, but more likely, we’ll need to schedule an appointment for you at a later date and time. We schedule our appointments with our client’s needs in mind. Allowing a certain amount of time ensures that all of our clients receive 5-star treatment (see also: What To Expect When Visiting MFX). Just squeezing you in could prevent another client from receiving a part of their experience. Remember the golden rule? We try to implement it here… after all, you wouldn’t want to miss out on your hand massage, would you? We promise, scheduling an appointment will be SO worth it!

“Can I book a cut and color with the same stylist?”

As a specialized salon (see Salon Specialization: What’s In It For You for more on this topic), we ask that all clients receive their cut and color from a stylist specializing in the respective area. In booking appointments this way, the benefits YOU receive are endless: services from team members who only focus on their strength in either cut and color, more flexibility with scheduling, time with TWO of your favorite MFX stylists, just to name a few.

“Why can’t I do the consultation and color in the same day?”

For all of our new color clients, we require a color consultation before booking your color service.    We take our color work seriously, and we know that you are investing a lot of money for your professional hair color.  The reason we require a consultation for first time color appointments is so that our color experts will know how much time to set aside based on your hair length, density, condition of your hair, and desired color results.   The last thing we want to do is schedule your first visit over the phone and then realize that we didn’t schedule enough time  based on your needs and then have to reschedule.  With the coloring technique called HeadMapping,  our color appointments are specially designed for the specific kind of color you’re receiving, as well as the condition and style of your hair. For example, a 1/3 panel of highlights takes less time than a 1/2 panel AB, so your processing time will need to match up with available time for a finish… Sound confusing? Don’t worry; we explain it all in the consultation.    On rare occasion, we are able to reserve a color appointment when time is available on our books immediately after your consultation.  We are able to do this only after you’ve come in for your color consultation.   Unfortunately, however, we are unable to hold a block of time immediately after your consultation when you call in over the phone.  Again, we will not know how much time to hold until your color expert has a chance to consult with you.

For the last question, we bet you’ve definitely wondered this before… but we would also bet that you probably haven’t asked us! Don’t worry, we can read your mind (and got a little help from the brave clients who did bring it up) and want you to still know the answer.

“Will you get mad if I see someone else? (i.e. too booked, too expensive, etc.)

In a nutshell: we would NEVER be mad at you, and certainly wouldn’t want you not to return because you thought we would be! While we appreciate all of our clients and the one-on-one relationships that come with regular appointments, we do understand that life happens and sometimes you may need to see another stylist. If the issue is price, let us know; your stylist can refer you to some else in the salon at a different price range who they could not only vouch for, but also coach before and during your first (second, or third) haircut with them. Like your bangs cut a certain way? Have your seasoned stylist show your new stylist. This is definitely something you wouldn’t get by going somewhere else. But, if the situation arises and you do see someone else, we will always look forward to seeing you the next time around.  We are what we call at team-based business.  All of our team members are paid on a salary compensation and they are paid very well.   We don’t pay commission so there is no internal competition between team members.    Would you believe it if I told you that we have many clients who see four or five different team members on various visits to the salon?  It’s different, and it’s so much better that way.

Salon Specialization: What’s in it for you?

Salon specialization is the practice of  creating special teams around cutting and coloring in an effort to allow each stylist to specialize in their respective area.   Specialization isn’t anything new.  Typically you’ll find specialized salons in top tier operations that are obsessed with customer service, whose focus is on excellence, and are incredibly team-oriented.   Maximum FX is a specialized salon.

If we’re being honest, of course we benefit from being specialized.  It helps us to book appointments with more flexibility, allowing us to service more clients and offer a broader range of service availability. Speciazlization also allows us to embody one of our core values: Teamwork. When one team member is falling behind on timing, there’s another one available and waiting to help them out. We can rely on each other, and trust in each other’s skills.

But if we’re being even more honest, the benefits YOU receive from specialization in the salon far outweigh ours.

Specializing allows stylists to excel in their desired skill by achieving higher education, like this cutting class led by Christine Zilinski.

Specialization allows you to receive the absolute best services MFX can offer.

Specialization allows us to offer you the best services possible from the best-trained and most-specialized stylists available. From the beginning, our stylists get to choose their area of specialization and commit to doing the work they love. This soon becomes evident in the results they produce, the investment they make in their craft and the continued education they seek in order to hone their skills even further. Ever heard the expression “Jack of all trades, master of nothing?” At MFX, our stylists are masters in their specialization, whether it be cutting or coloring.

In addition to getting the best possible service and results, you also share one of our benefits: flexibility and availability in scheduling! Some color and cut combination services can take up to THREE HOURS! That’s an entire afternoon that would need to be available for one specific stylist. With a demand for a long appointment, availability can sometimes be a nightmare, pushing your color or cut out two, three, maybe even four weeks!  Combine this with a demanding work schedule or children’s school demands, and we’d only see you twice a year! With specialization, the necessary time for each individual stylist is greatly reduced, giving you a much greater chance of getting your cut and color when you need it at the best time for you.   It’s not about us, it’s about YOU.

Sure, specialization means that sometimes another stylist will blow-dry your hair, or rinse out your color, but rest assured that you can trust their skills as well. All of our stylists must be skill certified on all of the services we offer in the training process. Not only does this ensure that they are able to provide you exceptional results, but that the results will reflect the superior skills of one another. However, if there’s a certain way you like your bangs dried or your favorite stylist does this “thing” during your shampoo that feels soooo good, let us know! Our stylists are more than happy to share their skills with each other. What’s better than one stylist giving you an awesome blowout juuuust the way you like it? Another one able to do the exact same thing.  We share this bit information not to convince you that this is a better way to provide services, but instead, to inform you why we’ve chosen to operate this way.    That’s not to say that salons that do not specialize are inferior.   Specialization works for us, and we’ve seen better results all the way around.

Headmapping™: Helping salons and clients care for the environment

Hair Color Expert Erica Colon applies hair color using the Headmapping technique

With the increasing evidence of environmental damage shown by higher temperatures, a depleting o-zone layer and the disappearance of certain plants and animals, it is more urgent than ever for businesses to take steps to protect the environment in order to preserve it. Headmapping™ is the salon and beauty industry’s solution to conserving color waste as it allows salons, like Maximum FX, to reduce waste and make a conscious effort to care for the environment.

Headmapping™, created by Walter Claudio, is a new and innovative way to standardize hair coloring. It determines exactly which sections of hair will be colored and the exact amount of product to be used. With Headmapping™, color clients are still left with the color they desire but leave a smaller imprint on the environment in the process.

Headmapping™ is the only standardized hair coloring system that effectively reduces waste. According to the official Headmapping™ website, “the system defines areas of the head into specific sections, creating a ‘map’ that determines exactly how much… product… is required to perform each service.” Erica Colon, Lead Color Specialist of Maximum FX, says that it is as simple as paying attention; “Before, colorists were mixing the same amount of color for every color service. With Headmapping™, we can mix less color because [stylists] are paying attention to exactly which panels of the head are being colored.” By having this coloring system, it is possible to accurately measure the amount of color necessary to achieve the desired results and to eliminate wastes of unused product.

With eliminating color waste, Headmapping™ salons, like Maximum FX, are doing three major things to help safeguard the environment: minimizing their carbon footprint, decreasing the amount of toxic chemicals being washed down the drain and saving resources. When choosing a salon, color clients should consider choosing an eco-friendly one, concentrated in helping the environment, in order to decrease their environmental impact as well.

America’s #1 resolution is good for your skin too

According to PRweb and Yahoo!, the number one resolution for 2012 is “getting in shape.”  The best way to achieve this goal is with a balanced diet and exercise. Exercise helps to control weight, combat health conditions, improve your mood, increase energy, and promote better sleep (Mayoclinic.com).

It also helps to improve your skin!

The number one skin care problem is acne; exercise can help with that! Physical activity produces sweat, which helps flush bad, acne-causing chemicals and bacteria from your pores. As long as you bathe regularly after exercising, and always exercise in clean, ventilated clothing, exercise can actually help clear up your skin problems. Try Aveda’s Calming Body Cleanser, $16, to wash your body while also calming the senses and hydrating your skin.

We all know exercise helps to reduce stress, therefore also reducing the production of cortisol, the hormone which causes skin cells to age faster. With relief from stress, expect to have a naturally fresh, glowing complexion.

Finally, exercise helps to increase blood circulation, carrying vital nutrients to all parts of your body, especially the skin (your largest organ). Blood circulation helps keep skin cells healthy and encourages quick cell turnover… which helps you prevent wrinkles! For even more help in the cell turnover department, try Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics™ Exfoliant, $20. For anti-aging, check out Aveda’s Green Science™ Firming Face Crème, $55.

As you’re powering through your fifth mile or trying to think of a reason to skip your Saturday morning boot camp class, just remember, with exercise – and a little help from Aveda – your skin will be fabulous in no time!
