Alright ladies, I’ve had a lot of clients wanting to grow their hair out so I thought it would be helpful to write up some tips on what to do while growing your hair out. The most important thing to consider is to take care of your hair. There is nothing worse than long damaged hair. Also, remember it is a process. It does not happen over night. So be patient.
Tip #1- Get on a regular health trim routine. This means if your hair is short you still may need to come in every 5-6 weeks for your trims to help keep the hair healthy and to readjust your layers so that your hair still looks cute during the growing out process. To keep from getting bored try some different styling techniques. Ask your stylist the next time you come in to get your “health trim” for some quick tips on ways to switch up the style. Once it gets to a longer length and you have grown out all those layers from your pixie or bob you can start moving your health trims to every 6-8 weeks. You’ll know when your there when you’ve gotten past that awkward stage where it flips because it hits your shoulder. Many of you think that if you come in for your trim it’s cutting off what you just grew out. Not necessarily true. What we’re doing is cutting those split ends before they split up higher and you end up needing to get a shorter haircut because of breakage. Have you ever gone months without getting a hair cut and you go in for what you think is going to be a trim and they tell you that you need to cut off 3 inches to get rid of the damage? Well that’s because you didn’t do your “health trims”. Super important!
Tip #2- Don’t forget about your scalp! Your scalp needs some tender love and care too. Try and do a quick daily scalp massage to help stimulate your scalp and promote healthy hair growth. Either massage your scalp during your shampoo or after you shower, take a big paddle brush and tip your head over and brush your hair from scalp to ends in every direction. Be sure to only do this when your hair is dry. This helps stimulate the blood flow in your scalp which helps produce healthy hair growth.
Tip #3- Try to not wash your hair everyday. It tends to dry out those luscious locks you’re working so hard to achieve. Find a dry shampoo that works for you or for all you blondes out there use a lil’ baby powder to absorb the oils. If you feel like your hair gets too oily too fast, go ahead try not to wash it for a while. The PH balance in your hair will change and your scalp will stop producing as much oil… give it a whirl! The oil your scalp produces helps moisturize those locks and if you wash it everyday you don’t give your hair time to soak it up.
Tip #4- DEEP CONDITION!!! It is sooo important. Find a routine that works for you. Pick one night a week and make it a beauty night. Wash your hair and do a lil’ scalp massage and put on your favorite deep conditioner. Give yourself a pedicure or a mini facial or shave your legs. Heck, even pour yourself a glass of wine and watch one of those chick flicks you know you’ve been wanting to watch. Even better, take that glass of wine and that 50 Shades of Grey I know all y’all are reading and get sucked into a few chapters. Aveda has some awesome deep conditioners to try out.
